Exodus 20: 12
The 10 commandments were given by God for our good. Every one of them, if followed, benefit us in the here and now, as well as eternally. The commandment we have before us today carries responsibility to three levels. Society at large, parents, and kids. First, parents have a responsibility to teach kids to honor and obey them, through love and discipline. It takes much discipline in the parent’s life to be consistent with this teaching. Second, the child must, at a reasonable age, submit to parents and God’s rules. Lastly, society has a limited role in refusing to accept the behavior of children, at any age, who dishonor their parents. Why is this commandment so important? First, because it is right and good. Second, because the honor and respect people show to each other begins as an infant, with his mother and father. Our world today is filled with sinful, undisciplined, selfish, and lazy parents, who began as undisciplined, selfish, and lazy children, who had undisciplined, selfish, and lazy parents, who had….. on and on… so where did it start? With the parent’s parents… with sin. So then, where does it end?
First, sin ends with Jesus.. Then it ends with me… and you.. What? If you are a parent, begin now, where you are, and get help. First, on your knees, asking God for His help. Second, from your church family. And if you do not have little kids, Let me ask a question. Who do you know, who needs a little help with this? Who do you know, who needs someone to pray diligently for their parenting skills.. for wisdom.. for the Holy Spirit of God to intervene in their lives..?Are you praying for them, or just condemning them? Who do you have influence over, who will value your wisdom in this area? Who needs someone to give them a break every now and then? Who trusts you enough to let you love them…? The Jesus in you wants to come out.. Won’t you let Him..?
Father,… oh we need you.. We need you so much, especially in this area. Please help me and my friends today. Give us the power and strength to obey your commandments. All of them. Help us to have enough love and compassion, for others who struggle, to help them spiritually and physically. Thank you for Jesus, who loved us enough to take away our sins…
Verse 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.”
